Mourne Mountains

Lough Shannagh

Part of the Lough was frozen with sections of  ice scattered along the margins.

Snow on the Mourne Mountains

Most of the winter so far has passed with only sporadic frost and snow flurries. A light fall of snow last week allowed me, along with a couple of friends, to head up into the Mourne Mountains with the view of shooting several images from selected locations for a current project and my agency. Approaching Spelga Dam I could see that most of the western side was under heavy cloud. We decided to head on round to the carpark for the Lough Shannagh track and start from there.

There were several interesting spots along the margin of the shoreline. I often like to shoot from low-angle viewpoints.

Doan after sunset

Doan after sunset

It always pays to wait a while after sunset. You often get some interesting colour in the sky.

My main objective was a high-resolution panoramic image from the top of Slievenaglogh which provides a sweeping view across the high Mournes. On the summit, top temperatures were well into minus figures with a strong, bitterly cold wind. It was a bit of a slog up through the snow and ice to rich the summit. The light was excellent, and much clearer from this side of the mountains.

Silent Vally and Ben Crom from Slievenaglock

Not an easy climb to the summit of Slievenaglogh through the snow which had ice undying in parts, I was glad I had put my spikes on for the ascent. The Pano comprised 38 images with a total file size of 840Mb.

I was also compiling images for a feature that I’m currently writing on Novoflex equipment. I have been a long-time advocate of the Novoflex brand. They manufacture extremely high-quality equipment from complete tripod systems to comprehensive specialised heads for conventional and panoramic photography.

I sincerely hope we have not seen the end of the snow for the remainder of the winter. It adds a magic to this magnificent landscape at a less interesting time of the year!
